Brunch at Wild Honey Singapore

I must write about other food highlight of my recent trip to Singapore - Brunch in the wild honey. I mentioned how much I love brunch and this particular place was great but a bit expensive.

, Located on the 3rd Floor of the gallery rather luxurious Mandarin on Orchard Road, Wild Honey is open dawn to dusk Located breakfast served all day. I have to love a place that knows the value of a good breakfast at any time of day!

Reservations are made, the father, and I had to wait a little ahead of our time to meeting with Brother # 1 and had 15-20 minutes to be presented in a table. At 11 on Saturday the place was rocking and constantly busy for the next few hours we were there.

Inside, the decor is cozy and familiar, is poorly lit with lots of small tables and a variety of colorful furniture and chairs are upholstered in a fabric. No menus, but everything that is offered to write on several boards and you place your order at the counter. (These and a 10% service charge to hit your account, a bit naughty!)

Unfortunately, not allowed to take photos with to go in, I let the pictures speak for themselves of food.
We ordered each one of their breakfast options all day long with place names around the world. They are not cheap, ranging from $ 18-22 EUR before taxes, but it is an enticing choice and had a hard time choosing. Well, maybe not the father, it would always choose English Breakfast!

The English breakfast is scrambled eggs and bacon, pork sausages, fried mushrooms, tomatoes, home-style baked beans and toasted brioche. Fill a lot?
Brother, tired after a night out should the options of Mexico and Tunisia in New York before the election breakfast. Scrambled eggs with smoked sturgeon (fish), caramelized onions, sesame bagel, cream cheese. Yum.
And the lucky last, I chose the European breakfast, after consultation, more so than my brother. Eggs Benedict is one of my favorite candy for breakfast, but there is always a risk of doing in a new place, and so bad. Hopefully was the breakfast room, which is wild honey "interpretation" of this dish beyond good.

Two poached eggs, fried mushrooms and fried bacon brioche with hollandaise sauce. The ham made it a little more special than the average ham, brioche and eaten glory in this cabinet addicted to bread.

Wild Honey can not be cheap but it certainly is cheerful and happy to go back next time I'm in Singapore, a further shell of its breakfast menu all day trying to ... or exactly the same again!

How Exercise Impacts Menopausal Women

Penn State researchers have suggested that attitude may play an important role in how exercise affects menopausal women.
They came to the conclusion after they identified two types of women -- one experiences more hot flashes after physical activity, while the other experiences fewer.

"The most consistent factor that seemed to differentiate the two groups was perceived control over hot flashes," said Steriani Elavsky, assistant professor of kinesiology.

"These women have ways of dealing with (hot flashes) and they believe they can control or cope with them in an effective way on a daily basis," she stated.

Women who experienced fewer hot flashes the day after participating in vigorous to moderate physical activity were more likely to be part of the group that felt they had control over their hot flashes.

Women who had more hot flashes following exercise were likely to be those who felt they had very few ways of coping with their hot flashes, Elavsky and her colleagues said.

Elavsky suggested that cognitive behavioral therapy may help some women feel they have more control over their bodies and reactions to hot flashes.

The participants with fewer hot flashes the day after vigorous exercising were also less likely to experience anxiety and depression. However, women who had fewer hot flashes the day after only light or moderate physical activity had higher levels of pessimism and depression than others.

"The bottom line for research is that people need to look at individual differences. It`s not enough anymore to do a study and look at overall impact of an exercise program on symptoms. It`s very clear that we need to look at the different responses that women might have, and try to understand these individual differences more," said Elavsky.

Elavsky and her colleagues followed 24 menopausal women for the length of one menstrual cycle, or for 30 days if they were no longer menstruating. Each woman used a personal digital assistant to record hot flashes and wore an accelerometer at the hip to track physical activity. The women in the study regularly had hot flashes before the start of the study, experiencing from five to 20 a day.

"The real-time reporting of symptoms and the objective measurement is a strength of the study. There aren`t any studies out there that use both of these approaches. ... To ask a woman to report a symptom when she`s experiencing it is the most valid assessment," said Elavsky.

At the beginning of the study, the participants completed evaluations that looked at their depressive symptoms, chronic stress, perceived control over hot flashes, and personality.

They had a physical exam where researchers measured levels of reproductive hormones and body composition. Each woman served as her own control, therefore the data was analysed for each separately.

If a woman experienced a hot flash during the observation period, she entered the event on the PDA, along with the severity and length of the event, where she was, if she had recently consumed a trigger, such as coffee, and included other situational information.

At four random times throughout the day, the PDA prompted the woman to assess and record daily stressors and mood. At the end of the day, each completed a fifth assessment and looked retrospectively at how her day went and how well she coped with her hot flashes that day.

"I was surprised by how large the individual differences were," said Elavsky.

"I was also surprised that the association was present in terms of statistically significant association only in a handful of women -- and among those, there were two whose physical activity led to more hot flashes the next day and one that had the opposite. Maybe the reason why we don``t see the associations in larger studies is because they cancel each other out," she added.

The finding was reported in a recent issue of Maturitas.

Eating Pistachio May positively Impact Gut Environment

Eating pistachios may help alter levels of potentially beneficial bacteria in the gut, according to a new study. The preliminary 16-person study holds promise for supporting digestive health.

The research is the first study of pistachios and almonds and their modulating role on the gut microbiota composition.

“Gut microbiota, or the microbial environment in the gastrointestinal tract, provides important functions to the human host,” said Volker Mai, PhD, lead study author and assistant professor at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

“Modifying microbiota towards a ‘beneficial’ composition is a promising approach for supporting intestinal health, with potential effects on overall health, and it appears that pistachios may play a role in this modification.”

Pistachios appear to have prebiotic characteristics; they contain non-digestible food components such as dietary fibre, which remain in the gut and serve as food for naturally occurring bacteria. They also contain phytochemicals that have the potential to modify microbiota composition.

Foods with prebiotic properties may enhance the growth of beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract.

To examine this relationship between prebiotics found in pistachios and the gut, researchers conducted a feeding study at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland.

Sixteen healthy individuals were randomly assigned to eat an American-style, pre-planned diet that included either 0 ounces, 1.5 ounces or 3 ounces of pistachios or almonds per day.

Each participant’s diet was calorie-controlled to ensure they neither gained nor lost weight during the intervention. Multiple stool samples were collected throughout the study and analysed for bacterial community composition.

The researchers also quantified the amounts of Lactic Acid Bacteria and Bifidobacteria in the stool, two groups of live microorganisms that reside in the digestive tract and help break down food substances.

After controlling for age, dietary factors and other relevant variables, the researchers observed that after 19 days, people who ate up to 3 ounces of pistachios (about 147 nuts or 2 servings) per day had increased changes in levels of various gut bacteria.

According to the abstract, people who ate pistachios showed an increase in potentially beneficial butyrate-producing bacteria. Butyrate has been shown to be a preferred energy source for colonic epithelial cells and is thought to play an important role in maintaining colonic health in humans.

The difference in gut microbes was stronger in people who ate pistachios rather than almonds.

The researchers used “modern high throughput sequencing” to quantify specific gut bacterial DNA signatures before and after nut consumption.

According to the researchers, this is the first study using this method to observe that pistachios and almonds may have the ability to help change the amounts of bacteria thriving in the gut.

“Fibers and incompletely digested foods, including nuts, that reach the proximal colon provide compounds required for maintaining a diverse microbiota,” said Mai.

“While still in the early stages of research, this study is a promising sign that increasing consumption of nuts, specifically pistachios, provides a novel means to modify the number of the gut’s ‘healthy’ microbiota, with potential health benefits,” Mai added.

Secret to Breast Milk’s Anti-cancer Activity Revealed

English
French
German
The role of breastfeeding for protection against various forms of cancer has become known, but it does not work, it remained a mystery.

Now has a new study, a high level of anti-TNF-cancer-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) in breast milk, which could be a source of anti-tumor activity in breast milk revealed.

The researchers took samples of colostrum, the first milk that the newborn, and mature milk of young mothers. Then the researchers obtained blood samples from healthy women and more ready to feed infant formula.

Colostrum and mature breast milk, formula and blood were then tested all of them to measure their level of TRAIL.

The researchers found that breast milk contains colostrum and 400 - and 100-fold or higher than blood TRAIL. No sign in the formula detected.
"The important role of breastfeeding in the prevention of certain cancers in childhood lymphoblastic leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, and neuroblastoma, it has been shown previously," the researchers wrote.

"However, endogenous soluble TRAIL to explain a strong candidate for the general biological effect of breastfeeding against cancer," he said.

Mothers selected to participate in the study were admissible because they showed no signs of pre-eclampsia, infection or fever, and delivered healthy infants at term.

"To our knowledge this is the first time that TRAIL was measured in colostrum and breast milk. This study showed significantly higher TRAIL in colostrum and breast milk in relation to circulating levels of TRAIL in the serum," conclude the researchers.

The study was published in the Journal of Human Lactation published by SAGE.

Just 15 mins of exercise a day can help smokers kick the butt

Are smokers, who probably easier to quit smoking, researchers say. A team of scientists from the National Institutes of Health Research and the China Medical University in Taiwan, is the hospital of the Study of Health and habits of 434 190 people in Taiwan from 1996 to 2008. Get only 15 minutes of exercise per day, 55 percent more likely to smoke than those who do not leave `t work at all.

They also found that smokers 43 percent less likely to relapse was when they gave up.

The life expectancy was an increase of 5.6 years on average and decreased the risk of death by 43 percent, she laid found settled on the same level as Non smoking.
Even if you don `t quit, the benefits of an active lifestyle are obvious, with life expectancy among smokers receive 30 minutes of exercise per day, with an increase of 3.7 percent.

"Our message is, stop smoking and exercise - no time is the best," said Professor Chi Pang Wen, the data at the World Congress of Cardiology presented in Dubai, Digg.com.

BP Screening May Cut Rate of CVD Events and Death By 3pc

Could reduce a 25 percent increase in the detection of hypertension in 19 developing countries, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) events and deaths that occur each year, up to 3 percent in these countries, a new study has suggested. The study by researchers at Harvard Medical School found that about 900 million people in developing countries have high blood pressure, but only a third are aware of their disease.

In addition, only 100 million of these people are treated, while only 5 percent of the total can be controlled.

In this context, this study designed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of an intervention in order to demonstrate increased from 25 percent in developing countries with a screening instrument in a laboratory, not to people with a treat blood pressure over 140 mmHg systolic and CVD risk more than 20 percent.

The study found that the investigation would be 25 percent of the population in an increase of over 10 percent lead in the rate of appropriate treatment of hypertension in patients at high risk.
The operation would lead to about 3.1 percent fewer cardiovascular events and death. In addition, increasing cost-benefit ratio of screening programs have been clearly observed under a times the GDP per capita in 19 developing countries.

"Strategies can increase the detection of high blood pressure can lead to a significant reduction in deaths due to CVD, at a cost that is acceptable according to WHO recommendations," said Dr. Thomas Gaziano, associate professor of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard University.

The preliminary data was presented at the World Congress of Cardiology.

Whew Katy Perry Avoids Wardrobe Malfunction Photo

I don’t know, you guys. Katy Perry‘s kind of been acting a hot mess lately — and her latest wardrobe malfunction really isn’t helping her image. The pop star recently showed up to the ASCAP POP Music Awards in a gorgeous, sophisticated Temperly London gown — one we normally wouldn’t associate with Perry’s quirky, edgy, sometimes downright ridiculous style. And she looked amazing! Blue hair and all! But … it was only a matter of time before she, you know, practically bared her nipples to the world. Dang it, Katy, you were so close.

While she stood on the red carpet, posing for photogs, one of the straps, as you can see, slipped off her shoulder and Perry came precariously close to pulling a Tara Reid. (Some are saying that you can actually see the top of Perry’s nipple in the photo, but, I don’t know — I’m kind of on the fence.)

Look, wardrobe snafus happen. I know that. You know that. Anybody who’s ever picked up an Us Weekly knows that. But something about Katy’s is different. It’s almost as if it happened for a reason. It’s like the universe (and Katy) is telling us that some people just aren’t meant for fancy-shmancy clothes. And that’s all right.

If Katy was wearing something more casual, more out there, and a strap fell down, I feel like this little mishap wouldn’t have been so glaring. It’d just be, like, “Look at this crazy thing that happening to a crazy rocker! Whatevs!” But the fact that Perry was all dolled up and looking sort of uncomfortable while this happened, well, I kinda feel like it’s proof that she should just stick to her wacky, one-of-a-kind outfits. I mean, isn’t that part of the reason we love her?

Do you like Katy in this dress, or do you prefer her in crazy get-ups?

He only began to share links to the site in your Facebook and Twitter accounts last night Thursday, but some time after all the love he received their trends in Internet, Wang began to draw flak of netizens to not be too upfront in its approach.

See: siege of Wang, until recently, does not mention the fact that had already been agreed on another course in the NUS: information systems.

Those who visited his page – and her liked it – have believed that they showed their support to a talented student who had unfortunately denied entry into one of the leading universities in Singapore.

Cellular Pathway Linked to Obesity-Related Disorders `Found`

The scientists, led by a researcher of Indian origin say they have found a safe route to the cell diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and fatty liver is associated.
Tapan Chatterjee and his colleagues at the University of Cincinnati say that their findings could be a potential target for molecular metabolic disease in humans.
We found that the "Delete" genetically the enzyme histone deacetylase 9 (HDAC9) completely protected mice against the health effects of diets high in fat, such as hyperglycemia, liver disease, high cholesterol and fatty acid.
Chatterjee said HDAC9 was found to lead to obesity-induced dysfunction of body fat. "Failure to differentiate from fat cells and store them properly in obesity is excess calories to fatty tissue (fat), inflammation, fatty liver, insulin resistance, diabetes and the associated increased cardiovascular disease," he said.
"We know that dysfunctional fat tissue is the culprit induced behind the obesity disease. Caloric intake promotes HDAC9 down-regulation, the conversion of fat precursor cells allowing fat cells functional, able to efficiently store the excess calories for future use and maintenance of the whole body lipid and the stability of the glucose.
"Unfortunately, in the history of the food HDAC9 at the level in adipose tissue, the transformation that leads to dysfunction of adipose tissue and regulated by the outbreak of diseases such as diabetes, diseases of the liver is blocked, high blood pressure and heart disease," said Chatterjee.
The researchers said previous studies, high HDAC9 expression was found in the fat cells to be guilty of the underlying molecular dysfunctional adipose tissue in obesity for.
"In this study, deletion of the gene HDAC9 completely prevented mice from developing obesity-related chronic diseases of high fat foods mean. These results, the discovery of a molecular potential culprit in the development of obesity-related diseases," said Chatterjee.

Anti-cholesterol Statins Don`t reduce Melanoma Nisk: Study

Despite earlier indications that people have statins to lower cholesterol have a lower risk of developing melanoma, a study of thousands of women found that the popular drug to prevent the deadly skin cancer, nothing to do. The cell experiments, and a test in people have suggested some of the very properties of statins, which may protect against heart disease also help prevent melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
However, the researchers found by Michael Simon, Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, took no effect on melanoma among women who took drugs, including atorvastatin and pravastatin for lowering cholesterol.
"I do not think there's nothing here suggests that statins may protect malignant melanoma," said Simon.
The researchers, whose report was published in the journal Cancer, were data from the massive Women's Health Initiative study, which followed 120,000 women over 10 years.

The researchers compared more than 8,800 white women who took a statin that 111 000 women who know and have found 89 cases of melanoma among statin users and 1111 cases among non-users over a period of 12 years.  This led to similar rates of melanoma in each group, nine cases per year per 10,000 women.  The results were the same, irrespective of the nature of the women were taking statins how long it took.  "For primary prevention (melanoma)` I think it put the nail in the coffin of this theory, "said Robert Della Valle, chief of dermatology at the VA Medical Center in Denver, who has not participated in the survey.  The team `s Simon wrote that statins, because there is evidence that skin cells in the lab, it's possible that people who don` t take sufficient concentrations of active ingredients to achieve Unlike a risk of developing melanoma.

Other studies of people with an increased risk of melanoma than the general group of women in the current study could also "give more conclusive results," they added. Based on the evidence that statins can help destroy tumor cells in a petri dish, which diagnosed a way to drugs already in human use could be a melanoma, said Della Valle.
But as far as prevention goes, Simon said, it would be better for resources to things that are known to prevent skin cancer to be devoted to.  Risk factors for melanoma is exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or tanning beds, fair skin to burn, moles or other pigmented birthmarks, smoking and family history of cancer prone.  "I think, on the basis of (the results of the study), we must combine our forces to continue education on sun protection: Keep yourself out of use of the noon sun, sun protection," said Simon.

Exercise ‘Helps Smokers Kick The Butt`

Exercise can help you stop smoking and remain smoke-free, the new data has revealed.According to the data, increased exercise, life expectancy among smokers and nonsmokers alike.
The study of the 434.190 people who went through the program at a private medical examination fee payment by the company 1996-2008 in Taiwan showed that current smokers (who participated in at least moderate activity), 55 were per percent more likely than those who inactive were to leave.

In addition, these smokers were 43 percent less likely to relapse than smokers who were inactive.

Physical activity in these questions have also been shown to increase life expectancy, even among smokers.

Smokers who had participated in physical activity for a longer life expectancy of 3.7 years and a reduction in mortality from all causes by 23 percent - equivalent to the level of ex-smokers with a low level of activity achieved.

The results also showed that ex-smokers increased their life expectancy by 5.6 years and reduced the overall mortality by 43 percent - corresponding to the observed level of inactive non-smokers.

"Physical activity can help smokers quit smoking and smoking cessation has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and should be the goal of all smokers", CP Wen, National Institutes of Health Research Taiwan, he said.

"If smokers can continue to pursue, not only can increase the dropout rate, but may also mortality from all causes and consequences of heart attack, reduce the long term," said Wen.

A prospective study of 434.190 people in Taiwan, was conducted over a period of 12 years. Leisure physical activity of each individual are grouped into: 1) idle, 2) low active (15 minutes per day), and 3) active (30 minutes per day).

The study was organized at the World Congress of Cardiology of the World Heart Federation, presented.

Women with heart disease likely to have girls: Iran study

Tehran -  Women with some heart disease are more likely to give birth to girls, says a study conducted by a university in Iran. It found that 75 percent of the 216 children born to 200 pregnant women with diagnosed heart diseases were girls.

"We believe that this is the first study looking at the relationship between gender and the mother's cardiac disease," A. Alizadehasl of Tabriz University said in a statement. "We hope that this will lead to further investigation into this area."

Sixty-four percent of the pregnant women in the study group were diagnosed with valvular disease (involving one or more of the heart valves), 19 percent had dilated cardiomyopathy (heart unable to pump blood efficiently) while 14 percent had uncorrected or significant residual congenital heart disease (defect in the heart's structure and great vessels present at birth).

"This is a very interesting observation," said Kathryn Taubert, chief science officer, World Heart Federation. "The chromosomes in a man's sperm are responsible for the sex of a baby but this study suggests that there may be a relationship between the health status of the mother and the sex of the babies she is able to carry to full-term. As the number of women with heart disease is increasing around the world, this could prove to be an interesting area for further research."

The findings were presented at the World Heart Federation's World Congress of Cardiology in Dubai recently.

Large amount of Vitamin C intake `may lower BP

Taking large doses of vitamin C can reduce blood pressure moderately, was a new study.

But researchers at Johns Hopkins University, suggested that invite people, except for additions.

"Our research suggests a modest blood pressure-lowering effect of vitamin C supplementation, but before supplements can be used to treat high blood pressure, what we really need more research, the consequences will understand they are recommended," Edgar "Pete" R. Miller III, who led the study said.

About 30 percent of adults in the United States has high blood pressure, or hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Successful treatment may include medicines, exercise, weight reduction and dietary changes such as reducing salt intake.

Some experts believe that large amounts of vitamin C, an essential trace element that is found mainly in fruits and vegetables, could reduce the pressure, but randomized controlled trials of dietary intervention, the gold standard of nutrition research - have produced mixed results.

Miller and colleagues evaluated data and analyzes reports from 29 randomized, controlled clinical studies published to date, the systolic and / or diastolic blood pressure values and also compared intake of vitamin C with placebo.

What they found is that the average value of 500 milligrams of vitamin C per day - about five times the recommended daily requirement - reduced blood pressure by 3.84 mmHg in the short term. Among people diagnosed with high blood pressure, was the decline was about 5 millimeters of mercury.

By comparison, Miller said, patients, the blood pressure medications such as ACE inhibitors or diuretics can expect about 10 millimeters of mercury blood pressure reduction.

500 milligrams of vitamin C is the amount in about six cups of orange juice. The recommended daily intake of vitamin C for adults is 90 milligrams.

"Although our review showed only minor effects on blood pressure when the entire U.S. population of the blood pressure dropped to 3 millimeters of mercury, there would be much less a few strokes," said Miller.

The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Russia To Ban Smoking Indoors

Russia is on the smoking ban in all enclosed spaces, in an effort to habit that kills 500,000 people every year break, said the Health Ministry. All disputes between the ministries of the ban have been resolved," said a spokesman of the Ministry.

The bill still requires the approval of Parliament. The World Health Organization (WHO) welcomes the bill, describing it as a "breakthrough" for Russia.
But Russia `s Consumers Union criticized the bill, saying that borders do little to discourage the use of snuff, Rossiyskaya Gazeta government newspaper.

More adults smoke in Russia than in any other major country in the world of smoking, the WHO published a report last year concluded.

He said that there were nearly 40 percent of the country's 143 million members of the population smoking.

Smoking-related diseases kill as many as 350,000 to half a million Russians every year, according to Russian officials.

In 2010, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin approved a national program to combat the snuff-developed, the number of adult smokers in a neighborhood that 2015.programme be reduced by the number of adult smokers a quarter will fight cut to 2015.

Intensify Immunisation Efforts: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO), which is the year of strengthening routine immunization campaigns in South Asia, said that the region has a more aggressive strategy to address the low immunization adopted.
Countries observe World Breastfeeding Week in the world the first dose on Saturday, WHO said Friday.
Because a person who is immune to infectious diseases, vaccines stimulate the body's immune system to protect the person against subsequent infection or disease.
"About 9.7 million children in the region are still not getting the basic vaccines, as the third dose of DTP-containing vaccine. Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions," Samlee Plianbangchang, Regional Director for South Asia said."Do not grow up in funding and new initiatives for research and development to go in vain due to lack of perceived benefit. We need to raise public awareness and ensure that the public understand how the vaccine saves lives," said Plianbangchang.
Immunization coverage with DTP3 is currently estimated vaccines in Southeast Asia is still relatively low, 73 percent, according to WHO.
While some countries have national coverage of high (90-95 percent), others find it difficult to provide universal coverage in different states, provinces and districts, which are to establish a variety of obstacles.
The WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia adopted a resolution in September 2011, of the 11 Member States approved by declaring 2012 as the year of strengthening routine immunization.
"Rate As part of increased efforts, North Korea, Maldives, Myanmar and Timor-Leste, the introduction of the pentavalent vaccine in routine immunization schedule will be. Other countries are now the introduction of other vaccines on evidence collected data on the burden of disease studies and the financial sustainability based "WHO said in a statement.

Could Germs Be Making You Fat

The germs that can live in the intestines help cause obesity and a number of health symptoms that together with him, according to the researchers. It could be that some bacteria causes inflammation and loss of appetite disorders such as inflammatory bowel diseases Crohn's and colitis can cause, the researchers report in the journal Science.
In other words, the seeds that you eat too much, Andrew Gewirtz of Emory University in Atlanta, and colleagues.
"Previous studies have suggested that bacteria can influence how energy is absorbed by the food, but these results show that intestinal bacteria can actually influence appetite," Gewirtz said.
"Why do people eat more?"
"The obesity epidemic is of people who are driven to eat too much, but why do some people eat more?"
Gewirtz said the research suggests that bacteria play a role - perhaps a population of bacteria that thrive because other organisms, the competition has been destroyed by antibiotics, access to clean drinking water and other factors of modern life.
His team ran the results through accident.
"We have mice is examined with colitis," Gewirtz said in a telephone interview.
The team suspects a kind of germ was responsible, then they are transferred mouse embryos into surrogate mothers, do not get infected from their mothers.
Babies are colonized by bacteria and other microorganisms shortly after birth and the composition of these colonies - who still live in the skin and intestines - are very similar to those of the mother.
Colitis was better, but the baby mice became obese and developed metabolic syndrome - a collection of symptoms, high cholesterol, excess fat around the waist, high blood pressure and insulin resistance includes.
Insulin resistance means that the body does not effectively use insulin to the food and Gewirtz believes that can be the key.
Previous studies
The researchers found a new study in the normal mice became obese and lean fat in the diet of mouse intestinal bacteria.
They worked with the team, including Ruth Ley of Cornell University in New York to see what is the role of intestinal bacteria may play.
"What we think, is that the mice are susceptible to intestinal inflammation," Gewirtz said. "If you have a large number of inflammatory signals about, insulin is not working properly."
Weeks of treatment with antibiotics has contributed to and diets.
"If we take the consumption of foods that are generally good, and certainly not obese limit," he said. "They are, however, insulin-resistant."
The identification of microorganisms
Gewirtz team is now working to see if they can identify the microorganisms involved. They are working to see if obese people have unique patterns of intestinal bacteria.
Scientists know that hundreds of species of bacteria live in the intestines and the average person has about 2 kg, worth. Chinese scientists recently in the journal Nature reported that they had found 1,000 different species in the intestines of humans.
Sun obesity was by taking an antibiotic to kill germs that eat people to make offensive treat?
"It is very difficult to replace the bacteria that we have," Gewirtz said. Studies have already shown that it is difficult to treat conditions like Crohn's disease, even with antibiotics months.
